Purpose:
As a Commerce City Police Sergeant assigned to the Professional Standards Unit (PSU), you will work under the general direction of a Police Commander. This PSU Sergeant will be responsible for ensuring Departmental compliance with policies and procedures, state and federal laws and regulations, and maintaining the high standards and integrity of the Commerce City Police Department through the complete, efficient, and proper investigation of allegations of employee misconduct.

General Statement of Position:
The successful applicant will be expected to fill this position based on the department's needs. The applicant is expected to work 16-24 hours weekly after completing the necessary training and mentoring. This applicant will be assigned to the work schedule that best fits the department's needs.

Investigates alleged misconduct by Department employees and maintains the confidentially of Professional Standards Unit Investigations
Ensures the security of the confidential information in the files of the Professional Standards Unit
Checks daily for incoming complaints by accessing the IAPRO mailbox
Reviews all completed informal complaint resolutions to ensure all documents are attached
Tracks completion dates for case investigations
Ensures discipline is completed and recorded
Assigns case numbers for accidents and Informal and Formal Personnel Investigations
If criminal charges are filed against any subject officer, the Investigative Professional Standards Sergeant must be available as an advisory witness at the trial
Must be available to answer questions and open for call-outs at anytime
Requires availability by phone at anytime
Conducts new officer orientation to Professional Standards Unit
Prepares annual Professional Standards report for the Chief of Police
Prepares annual Federal Officer Involved Shooting Report
Prepares monthly Delinquency Case Report
Provides staff assistance to line supervisors investigating misconduct by Department employees
Reviews standards and ensures the Department remains in compliance with Department Policies
Assesses police practices and services, compliance, or operational risks
Directs the development or implementation of compliance-related policies and procedures for the Department
Reviews or modifies policies or operational guidelines to comply with best business practices
Provides Department training on policies and procedures
Conducts administrative Officer Involved Shooting and In-custody Death Investigations (except non-injury accidental discharges and dispatching injured animals) by employees of the Department
Records and triages walk-in, phone, mail, email, and anonymous complaints
Updates and edits Department policies using our partner, Knowledge Management System
Manages Knowledge Management System's Daily Training Bulletins to ensure timely completion
Generates Knowledge Management System reports as directed by the Professional Standards Commander
Works with Knowledge Management System personnel to assist in the maintenance of the system
Reviews current Department policies and procedures for conflicts that could result in liability issues
Conducts research requested by the Commander of Professional Standards or the Chief of Police
Attends periodic meetings and conferences, professional workshops, and training related to professional standards
Reviews standards and ensures the department remains in compliance; stays abreast of all aspects of P.O.S.T (Police Officer Standards and Training) compliance
Recommends compliance-related policies and procedures throughout the organization
Conduct Department audits as directed by the Commander of Professional Standards and the Chief of Police
Works closely with City and outside counsel addressing CORA/CCJRA requests and other duties assigned by the Professional Standards Commander and the Chief of Police
Completes all other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications


Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age;
A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university recognized by a nationally accredited body for colleges and universities (A moratorium has been placed on this eligibility requirement and does not apply to this announcement);
A United States Citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for United States Citizenship;
Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license within 30 days of the date of hire;
Must be Colorado P.O.S.T. certified or certifiable upon hire;
Currently employed full-time by a local, county, or state law enforcement agency as a certified peace officer working as a police sergeant; or not more than six months out of service;
A minimum of five (5) consecutive years experience as a full-time police officer, working in a police-related function* for a paid, full-service local, county, or state law enforcement agency;
A minimum of three (3) years experience as a full-time police sergeant, working in a police-related function* for a paid, full-service local, county, or state law enforcement agency;
A minimum of two (2) consecutive years' experience working in a professional standards or internal affairs unit for a paid, full-service local, county, or state law enforcement agency;
Must be available for recall and reachable by telephone at any time
Police-related function experience must be sworn and certified police work that includes a minimum of one (1) year of uniformed patrol, where primary duties include responding to radio calls for service and officer-initiated enforcement activities, such as criminal complaints, traffic crashes, disturbances, or crimes in progress; other police experience may include assignments such as patrol, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, or any other related operational special assignments or functions.

Preferred Experience
A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university recognized by a nationally accredited body for colleges and universities;

PAID TIME-OFF BENEFITS:

Holidays: There are 11 paid holidays each year.
???????Eligibility for Pay Increases: Employees are eligible for a pay increase during their annual appraisal following a successful evaluation. Pay increases do not come at the time of the six-month introductory evaluation.
General Leave: Leave banks are granted to employees after six months of full-time employment. General Leave may be used for vacations, personal business, illness, or other reasons as requested by the employee and approved by his/her supervisor.
