Sr. Software Engineer, Advertising Framework

Los Gatos, CA 95032
United States

If you are a Senior Software Engineer well-versed with scripting languages, experienced building high-performing SDK components, and having a desire to code on a wildly-popular consumer electronics platform, wed love to talk with you!

Lets face it: The repeatable and unavoidable, often unrelated ads of the old unconnected TV world can be a nuisance! Our advertising team is working to change this by ensuring that Roku users get all the free content they want, supported by ads that are relevant, informational, and at least entertaining to watch. We need someone like you to optimize and expand our industry-first, highly ambitious efforts in the realm of adtech, and help us scale our advertising business and keep our users happily entertained.

Part of Rokus SDK, the Roku Advertising Framework (RAF) is a video ads library. While exposing a simple-yet-flexible API to the developer, internally it encapsulates advanced features like interactivity, audience measurement, and stitching technology for OTT content. This being industry-first and key to our advertising business, your contributions to RAF will be strategic to the continued growth of the company. This is a great role for a senior professional who enjoys a high level of visibility and thrives on having a critical business impact, and is excited to work on a component that touches almost everything streamed on the Roku platform.

The goal is to scale RAFs ability to integrate relevant, useful, and entertaining ads into our channels, using Brightscript (our proprietary scripting language) and Roku APIs in combination with industry-standard technologies, while working in close collaboration with the RokuOS development team and others, both internally and externally to Roku.

Things you will do:

Scale a platform that currently serves billions of ads a month to previously unknown heights!

Continuously improve RAF by developing new and enhancing existing features on a monthly release cycle.

Work closely with our partner support teams to address their RAF needs.

Investigate, diagnose, and resolve issues within RAF.

Provide our developer community with an easy-to-use and regularly updated framework, sample code and documentation - with the goal of streamlining new content publishing and simplifying its monetization.

Things youve done or have:

10+ years of relevant software development experience.

Extensive experience with script languages like Lua, Python, BASIC offshoots (Visual Basic, VBScript, VBA), JavaScript and derivatives.

A proven track record and passion for shipping high-quality software.

Understanding of API design considerations and tradeoffs.

Experience integrating third-party code.

Ability to accurately estimate software tasks and work to schedule.

Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science or equivalent engineering experience.

Strong verbal and written communication skills; this role involves frequent communications with teams throughout Roku, and outside the company as well.

You get bonus points for:

Prior experience developing on the Roku platform.

Good understanding of Brightscript and Rokus SDK.

Working knowledge of Rokus Scene Graph framework.

Familiarity with the advertising ecosystem (ad and video servers; VAST, VMAP, SmartXML).

Experience writing functional and integration tests.

An understanding of media / video concepts like codecs, streaming, etc.

Embedded and/or consumer electronics experience.

Programming experience with C++ and firmware code.

An understanding of Linux, tools, frameworks, and libraries.
